My two-headed seahorse identified

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Two headed seahorseLast week I visited my local fish shop and was greeted by an amazing sight - A two-headed seahorse! I immediately placed a deposit on it and went home to prepare my aquarium for it’s arrival. The seahorse currently resides in my main aquarium but will be moved into a purpose built 150l aquarium when it has established.

Reef Food Blend

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Making your own mix of frozen foods can be a great way of providing your fish with a nutritious food that can be fed on a regular basis or used as a treat to add some variety to your fishes’. This is something that I make myself and feed to my fish as a staple part of their diet. I have listed a number of ingredients below that can be included but you can add, substitute or remove any items to customise the recipe to suit your particular needs.

My 55gal Reef

Here is I recent photo and video of my reef aquarium. It’s well stocked with soft corals and there are a few sps and lps in there too. I’ve been adding phytoplankton to the tank on a weekly basis and I have seen a real change in the growth of my corals, especially the leather corals.

Do you always need to buy a cleanup crew?

Friday, April 6th, 2007

I have been trying something new since I set up my nano reef and that is to run the tank without a cleanup crew. My theory was that since the aquarium was relatively small, I would be able to keep it clean with little maintenance. From the beginning, I would clean the glass daily and agitate the shallow sand bed to prevent detritus settling.

My Nano Reef #5

I haven’t posted an update on my nano reef in a while, so I decided to create a video of the tank. Since the last update, I have added a few zoanthid colonies and some macro algae and pretty much just let everything grow. All inhabitants seem to be doing really well and I think the reef is maturing nicely.

My Nano Reef #2

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

I have started setting up my nano and began by making changes to the back end of the aquarium. The back filtration chamber contains three compartments. I removed all of the media that was provided with the aquarium, as I will not be using it.

My Nano Reef #1

Nano ReefI have decided to set up a new reef aquarium. The aquarium is made by ORCA and is in the same design as the ORCA and Deltec 24g nanocubes. The aquarium is 30 x 34 x 36cm/12″ x 13″ x 14, which gives a water volume of 37 l./8 gal. (9.77 US gal.) for the main display area with a total system volume of around 12 gal. The aquarium has a built in filtration system behind a black divide, 18w 50/50 lighting and flow provided by a 300l/h pump. One great thing about the tank is the two built in fans that help to keep it cool.
